To go with the flow in a foreign culture, gives you the oppotunity to broaden your horizon and your view of the world.
Three elements of our programs support you in this challenge:

Life in a host family:
Families reflect certain values and lifestyle elements of a society. Everyday life in your host family can be quite different from what you are used to at home. In order to feel comfortable in your new environment, you will need a strong will to adjust and a touch of curiosity. Openess with your host family will help you integrate yourself as a family member.

Attending a public school:
Together with other teenagers of your town or area, you will go to classes. This will help you to understand life of teenagers in your host country and to make friends. You will discover new subjects and hobbies and find out more about yourself, for sure.
Integrating yourself starts with learning the language of your host country. This step is very important, because communicating with friends and your host family will become easier. Also, you will be able to move around more independently. Instead of learning words by heart and studying grammar, you will learn the language in its cultural context.

Support during your exchange year:
In each host country, YFU has a whole network of employees and volunteers who are in charge of your care. Throughout your stay they will support you and your family.
If you have a concern that you cannot solve with your host family, then your support persons will be there to help you. Regional and national offices of YFU are also prepared to help you.
In addition to this support network, YFU organizes various events in your host country. After your arrival, an orientation seminar will show you how to integrate yourself as quickly and smoothly as possible. Before returning back home, another seminar will facilitate your re-integration in your home country. Depending on your host country, other events will be organized for you.
