Types of Exchange Programs
YFU offers various forms of exchange programs that differ in length, content, and destination. This allows every student to choose according to their interests and possibilities.
1. Year-long and Semester-long Exchange Programs
The most common and popular choice is a one-school-year or half-year program. Students live with a host family and attend a local high school, truly experiencing everyday life in another country. This immersive experience allows them to dive deeply into a new culture, gain fluency in the language, and build friendships that often last a lifetime.
2. Short-term Exchange Programs
Summer exchange programs usually last between 3 and 8 weeks and take place during school holidays. They are ideal for younger students or for those who want to try living abroad before committing to a longer program. It’s a great opportunity to gain first international experience, improve language skills, and get to know a new culture in practice.
3. Themed Exchange Programs
These programs are not necessarily shorter but have a special focus—they combine studying abroad with specific interests or activities. You could, for example, study dance in Austria, art in Italy, play rugby in South Africa, or have an adventure in Chile.
They are a great choice for students who want to combine an international experience with something they are truly passionate about during their semester or year abroad. You’ll appreciate smaller groups, interactive programs, and the opportunity to make friends with peers from around the world.

Our Students’ Experiences
“I experienced my exchange in both western and eastern Germany—first in Paderborn and later in Dresden. I’m so glad I got to see two such different environments. My second host family welcomed me fully—I explored Dresden’s cultural life, we went on trips to Saxon Switzerland, and I truly felt at home. Looking back, no matter what challenges I faced that year, I was always surrounded by the right people. Thanks to them, I got through the hard times and am leaving much stronger than when I arrived.”
— Eliška, exchange in Germany
“I’m incredibly happy I chose Chile—a country at the literal end of the world. Every day I see mountains right outside my house, I go to school with an amazing class who care about me and help me with everything. My host family is absolutely wonderful; I feel safe and at home with them. Sure, it’s not always easy—my phone got stolen, I speak Spanish almost nonstop, and sometimes it’s just challenging. But it’s all part of the exchange. And if anyone is unsure about going to Latin America, I say: go! Here, you experience real culture you’ll never forget.”
— Péťa, exchange in Chile
“I’m on exchange in Texas, and I can say there are many differences between America and the Czech Republic—from the more relaxed school environment, to housing, food, and family life. What surprised me most is the mentality—people are open but also quite conservative. American and Texan flags are everywhere, and every day at school we say the Pledge of Allegiance. Even though it’s nothing like High School Musical, I’m enjoying it, and every day I learn something new—not just about America, but about myself.”
— Anička, exchange in the USA
“I went to Belgium without knowing French and actually ended up there a bit by accident—there was no space left in Switzerland. But within a few months I was speaking, I met two wonderful host families, and experienced a Christmas atmosphere I’ll never forget. I love Belgian markets, waffles, lights, and especially the calm family time. What surprised me most is how much people here value time together—whether it’s a four-hour Christmas Eve dinner, a trip to a holiday castle, or a simple day at home with my host sisters. Even though the beginning wasn’t easy, I wouldn’t change a thing. Belgium is a place you fall in love with slowly, but deeply.”
— Marie, exchange in Belgium
